You CAN get your phone unlocked in UK - just don't ask your phone service provider.

You can also get your phone unblocked in Thailand almost anywhere.

Your can get roaming on Thai networks so as long as you've pre-paid enough you should be OK....so long as there is a transmitter within range.

you could just buy a SIM for each country.

Once unblocked your phone will accept just about any sim card your drop in it....

I've actually used my Thai phone in Siem Reap - I think the Tha transmitter was in range or being poached!!!

It should be possible like wildfk mentions, but you'll be paying roaming costs and I'm not sure it'll end up being much cheaper than just putting your uk sim card back in?! In essence, you will be paying to receive calls, which is one of the of the things most people try to avoid by buying local sim cards... so if that's the main goal, I'd get a new prepaid sim card for each of the countries you visit (if you're there long enough to warrant the cost). Of course it can be tricky for people back home to keep track of where you are and on what number you are available at that particular day/week

i got a thai sim over there and it was really cheap to receive calls, also had my phone unblocked in thailand! they should be able to do it in the phone shops. the thai card worked in laos but not anywhere else.
