hi... great ideas.

get your butt on a ferry to continental europe 1st. catch a bus (www.eurolines.com) or a local train to warshaw, then krakow. you can also go via praque (i think).
then head up to st. petersburg by train. i'm pretty sure there's one leaving from warshaw. get on another train to moskow and then on the trans-sib train to china (beijing). or take the train from moskow to wladiwostok and get on the ferry to japan first. then to china (also by ferry). there are trains going down the chinese coast all the way down to vietnam (hanoi). from there you should be able to catch a train either going west to india (i'm not sure about this b/c of political condition - ask some travel helper for vietnam) or south to cambodia. the cambodian railroads are very poor - at least thats the last info i have - and they only reach up to 40km close to the thai-border. but that should be able to be done by bus or something.
as an alternative you might want to go via tibet from shouthern china to nepal, then to india. but in southern nepal i think there is some kind of military activity - check the CIA - coutry info for this!
as you make it into thailand there should be trains going all the way down to singapore where you will be able to catch a ferry to whatever island you want. do island hopping all the way through indonesia until you reach east timor. from that corner there should be ferries going to darwin. the new trans-continental-railroad (completed in feb 2004) will take you all the way across australia to sydney and other major cities in new south wales.
from this point on you might want to consider taking a plane across the pacific after all. a friend of mine who's in austrailia at the time told me that there are affortable fares to the fijis. maybe you can catch a plane from there to hawaii - which i think won't be really cheap.
as an alternative you might be able to work your way across the ocean on a ship/ferrry/cruise?
well... somehow you'll make it to the US.
sure you wanna leave out on south america?
take the greyhound busses across the US and again try to get a job onboard a ship if you are that determined not to fly.
if you do south america busses will get you everywhere you want. it just depends on how... a friend of mine who has travelled a lot by bus in south america told me that as a european you will have problems. most of them will be something like "where to put my legs...?"

was that enough ideas for the moment?
greetz and have fun. nils

hiya, just read your post and i am attempting to do the first leg of my RTW no planes trip fairly soon. i am in london at the moment and basically i am planning on driving to thailand, then getting a boat to oz, then after spending about a year in oz, see where the weather takes me.

If you wanna get in touch, maybe i can offer a lift some of the way!

Cheers

Rob

Cheers Lads,
Rob, that sounds cool, I'm aiming to leave early Feb. First stage France to Moscow. Whats your plan?

my (ours) plan is to head off on the 23rd of October.
I have now found a young lady who wishes to accompany me on this journey, so we are only looking to find 1 or 2 more people.

we are basically planning on getting to thailand by about End of Jan latest and take in as much as we can along the way. (as cheaply as possible!)

if you wanna bring your plans forward we have a seat.

Rob

Rob,
Sounds like a cool plan but I don't think I'll be able to afford to go before Feb and believe me I'd leave tomorrow if I could. Whats your route and budget?
Ken
