I'm doing ok thanks, the challenge is trying to break years of habit. Any time I get the thought of a cigarette into my head, I just say to myself "oh deary dear, I seem to have forgotten that I am now a happy, contented non smoker."

A trick that I used in the beginning - and I shouldn't really be admitting this in the open forums - I put scented hand cream on and whenever I felt the craving, I'd smell my smoke free hands. Worked really well.

I think the most important thing for me was realising that the greater part of the addiction is psychological. As I said, the challenge is breaking years of habit. Nicotine isn't that powerful a drug - I remember being terrified before boarding a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit thinking "how the hell am I gonna survive without a smoke?" and I was absolutely fine. Why? Because there was simply no way I could smoke. Try sitting in the living room, garden, whatever, for the same length of time without a smoke. Why should it be any different? Because your telling yourself that it's time for a smoke . . .

I gave up smoking years ago. March 1989 to be exact. I was about 22.

I got to the point where I hated it and I hated what it was doing to me. It was a war between me and the cigarettes, and at the end of the day there was going to be one winner, and it wasn't going to be the cigarettes. I was determined to never give in.

I'd do anything when I had a craving; I'd have a shower, go for a run, basically anything so that I couldn't and wouldn't smoke.

The other trick was that I took one day at a time; i.e. I thought that if I can do 1 day then I can do 2 days; if I can do 2 days I can do 3 days; and on and on.

Then you begin to feel better. The cravings diminish, your sense of taste and smell returns. It was as though every day was a fresh Spring day. Then I got more energy and finally got it out of my system physically and mentally.
