Travel Forums Africa and The Middle East How Realistically Dangerous ?

Short-listing from the countries I have remaining on my trip, how dangerous are each of these countries? Rating places like Myanmar as 'safe' for foreigners.

Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Gaza, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Somalia, Ethiopia

If i travel longer then I plan to go to the DRC and if not I'll need to find the cheapest way top return to th UK. Any suggestions?transiting countries may be an option, as is the cheapest flights.

From your list, Somalia is the only place that the uk foreign office advises against all travel to. The others have warnings about travel to parts of the country, apart from Djibouti and Saudi which do not have travel warnings but I'm not sure how easy it is get a visa for Saudi unless you are on the Hajj or part of an organised tour.

Agree with Bex76. And to add: even the northwestern part of Somalia is relatively safe to travel. You can enter from either Ethiopia or Eritrea.

I wouldn't go anywhere by the way in Afghanistan.

Af for cheap flights...you mean from the DRC or neighbouring countries? That won't come cheap at all. There are direct flights from Entebbe (Uganda) to Amsterdam for example, which is one of the faster direct flights from that region. Otherwise, try to go to West-Africa, arrange a ticket to Morocco with Royal Air Moroc and with Ryanair from Marrakesh. Might be cheaper.

Hello Craig :)

Pakistan is realatively safe depending on where u go. Check the latest news so to avoid political gatherings.
Ask Rola Jutt(a Pakistani member of TP) for more info.
Afghanistan is very dodgy. Foreigners and Afghanis who associate with foreigners are targets for the Teliban. Also if u go to Afghanistan u will be hindering the UN by making yourself a target for the Teliban. The country is also riddled with landmines which are difficult to spot. Kabul is relatively safe and the only part of Afghanistan I would consider visiting. If u want to go outside Kabul visit the landmine museum in Kabul so u will learn how to spot landmines and read in the Lonely Planet book about what to do if u do spot one.
For Saudi u will be unlikley to get a visa.
Iran is safe enough. I was there a month ago. So long as u adhere to Islamic dress and behaviour code u will be unlikely to get in trouble.
Get more info about the Iranian borders. The Iranian government are stepping up on border security and I am not sure what that will involve. Check the latest news before going near borders. Last I heard people were being kidnapped when they went near certain borders. Namely the Iraqi and the Afghani borders and the Turkish border can also be dodgy. Also be careful about camping and hiking in Iran. Quite a few people have been arrested and put in prison for wandering close to military bases.
Myanmar is relatively safe. But take care because of the volatile political situation there.

There other places I dont know anything about. Ask Petercaise who gave u the advise about Africa several months ago. He seems to be clued about everything.
