plastic has indicated that this thread is about Malaysia

Hello,
I am embarassed to say that I haven't been to a good beach resort before.

Have an opportunity to spend a weekend (Fri to Sun) at a beach resort in Malaysia after business trip in KL, and am trying to decide between Tioman and Langkawi.

- Am a lone female traveller
- Will be flying domestic from KL to destination, not so keen on 12 hour type of bus rides / long ferry transfers
- Looking for great first time experience - long white sandy beaches, wide expanse of blue sea, not too crowded
- Willing to spend for comfortable and rustic accommodation, maybe up to RM$400?
- Hoping to relax by the beach and maybe do some water sports, but mostly quiet time.

Any great recommendations? I can't decide between Langkawi and Tioman.... :( And not quite sure which are the better beach resorts either.

Any advice will be very much appreciated. Thanks! :)

Hi there!

Check this out.

I think I would choose to go to Tioman.. shameful to say, I haven't been to both places as a Malaysian

I'm sure our other Malaysian friends would give you a better suggestion.

Cheers,
Jane

Hi there,

if you're looking for a quiet island with sandy beaches n clear crystal water.. Langkawi is not really recommended.

it's a nice place but quite crowded and you gotta take a boat from the main island to other small islands to experience "better beach front"..

Tioman is great place especially if you're a beginner diver.. got few pubs and cheap cheap places to eat.. people are friendly.. beach is great..about 5 to 6 hours to Tioman if you were to take a bus and another an hour n a half by ferry.. though u could reach the island faster if you take speed boat..but twice more expensive than normal slow ferry. so it's either u want to save money or time..btw, there's a direct flight landing into the island by berjaya air..but bit pricey.

Well..other than those two, i strongly recommend you to go to Redang Island up on the north of KL.. about same journey hour to Tioman but nowadays with the help of Air Asia, you can actually fly to Kuala Trengganu and take a bus for half an hour to the jetty n then again ferry to the island about an hour...definately more expensive than bus..but a lot of time could be saved.. or else u can try Berjaya air which fly directly to the island.

I've just came back from Redang in May... I gotta tell you.. it's one of the best island i've been to. U can just lie on the sandy beach n looking at the sea for hours n hours without getting bored of its scenery.

you can try scuba diving even if you're a first timer.. they do have an hour class for it..and actually u can do the shallow dive after that.. cost is about RM120. you could find a lot of clown fish... yah..those Nemo..

Or you can go for snorkelling and island hopping tour.. roughly RM50 to RM60 for 6 hours. Can visit Perhentian..another best island in Malaysia. U can actually swim with turtles as big as small cars or swim with white baby sharks.. it was really a memorable trip for me.

Other than that, there's BBQ dinner along the beach at Berjaya Beach Resort..but eatery is much more limited than Tioman Island n more pricey when it comes to food n drinks.

Hope u'll have fun wherever u've decided to travel

Plastic,

Sorry I can't chuck in my 2 cents here since I haven't been to both islands myself ;)

Hayanna,

Holycow! You really did see turtles as big as small cars? I'm thinking of our locally made "kancil". That's ENORMOUS for a turtle Tell me it's a different car you're talking about!

Cheers!

Audrey,

yah! exactly..it's the size of Kancil..
it's that enormous..

there's this bay called "Turtle Bay"

nothing but Turtles.. no fish ..but turtles only..seriously!!!

at first, very hesitated to jump into the sea n to snorkel with them..
cuz very scared and freak out by its size..

but after a while, kept chasing the turtles to swim together

Hayanna,

That's freaking ENORMOUS!

You've been lucky! The last time I was there, the 2 turtles I saw were the size of what ------ Kancil's wheel?

I would have freak out like you too. But 5 sec later, I'll go after them and try to hitch a ride on their hardshell ... hahaha

Hayana,

Turtles the size of a small car like "Kancil"
At first, I thought you were referring to those toy cars!

Why didn't I see turtles that big in my trip to Perhentian back in May? Hmph! All I saw was turtles, no, wait, only one turtle, the size of a wok!

Looking at the bright side of it, now I have another reason to go there again. Hehe...

Cheers,
Hien

Hien..

Oh...I meant in Redang Turtle Bay...not at Perhentian...
But I doubt whether there's any differences..cuz had to take a speed boat out for about 15 mins from Redang main Island...I guess it's in between Redang n Perhentian then .. hehe

n it really was a size of kancil...got a pic to proove cuz many ppl dun believe..

join us at our next TP gathering..will show u the pics..hehe

Hi hi!
Right now I'm stuck between staying at Andaman (good internet rates) and Redang (Berjaya).
I'm wondering about the wet season in Langkawi now... is it really bad and does it rain most of the time?

Thanks so much
