Hi,
I am soon to set out on a year abroad, 8 months in Asia then working my way back across N africa and europe to home on the west coast U.S. I want to take a laptop with me but have been unhappy with the $ and options I am finding at home. I am looking for the smallest and lightest basic laptop. Where in asia would be my best bet to pick up a cheap, basic, SMALL laptop? As I have a loose schedule I can start my travels anywhere! Any and all suggestions welcome.
Thanks

Hard to answer this post. If you were visiting Thailand or Singapore for instance I would say buy back home in the U.S. I think the prices are lower than these two countries and you have a warranty that will be there when you need service. Buying in Asia may or may not have a warranty you can use somewhere else. Some of the free downloaded software may be knock-off copies that won't be supported with upgrades, etc.

Since you are traveling in Asia and not going back home I am not sure what to say. In the U.S. there are lots of sales on the weekends, I always find laptops reduced in price or on some kind of special! Maybe the cheapest model may not be the most reliable! Usually small laptops with a large capacity are more expensive than a slightly larger models.

Ask yourself "do you really need to carry a laptop with you at all?" You can almost always find an internet shop to use, especially in Asia! If you need one for photo storage you can use a a portable hard drive or take several memory cards with you. I use a flash drive with Firefox on it (plus a WP program, notepad and portable Clamwin anti virus - all free downloads for flash drives!) The Firefox matches the Firefox on my home computer, item for item including favorites. When I plug that flash drive into a computer in an internet shop it is like being at my home computer.

When you travel with a laptop you won't find that many security boxes that you can fit it into for safe keeping when you are out. If you planned on staying in cheap hostels your security is even less than a hotel. You have a good chance of having your laptop stolen by another tourist/backpacker more than any hotel workers! A flash drive fits in your pocket!

Lots and lots of electronics on sale this weekend in the U.S.

CompUSA might have some good deals coming up, especially if they go out of business (rumor.)

Best Buy, Circuit City and some of the "Office" something or others always have sales every week.
