Travel Forums Asia Ko phi phi and the islands for xmas?

hey everyone! Really need your advice! We're well on our way into our travels, now in Koh Samet, Thailand. Unfortunately we're faced with a dilemma.

we've heard from a lot of people that the south thailand islands are gona be so so expensive when we get down there. Hence why we've came to koh samet first, to tie up some time before heading down there and doing the popular sight seeing spots.

Do you have any knowledge of that area around christmas? In particular, Ko Phi phi. Thats where we would like to spend the 4 days leading up to christmas. And then we have to be in phuket either way on christmas day, to get the flight out of their the following morning!

Any recommendations about accommodation, especially for a budget traveller, if thats even possible! anything would be great.

Many thanks as always

Darren

I've only done a small day trip to Phi Phi but it's a fairly small island and the December-Jan period is probably quite busy in general. I'd doubt Christmas itself has a huge impact on things as it's not widely celebrated in Thailand (only a small extent in very touristy places). I could be wrong but there's probably a bigger celebration for NYE.

As for Phuket, Patong beach is where most the action is (assuming you experience enough peace and beauty on Phi Phi and don't mind being in a lively area!).

In terms of costs it will be dearer than other times of the year but compared to the UK I'm sure it's still quite cheap. But yeah I wouldn't let Christmas dictate things that much, aside from your personal plans and what you want to do for the day :P

When people say Ko Phi Phi is expensive, they mean in the respect that it is expensive for SE Asia. Compared to European prices it is still very cheap. I stayed on Phi Phi on the run up to christmas a few years ago (in fact just b4 the tsunami) and There were plenty of places to stay for cheap prices. I ended up at the Rock Backpackers hostel. I had my own tiny little room with a fan for about 200 baht a night i think it was. There was also a dorm there which was even cheaper. Most places were then 500 baht a night for a double or twin room with your own bathroom.

Re Phuket, I think Patong is horrible, absolutely not the sort of action I'm after. We stayed in a little guest house in Kata Noi, even that was a bit crowded for my liking.

There are some cheap-ish backpacker oriented bungalows on Phi Phi, you just have to walk far enough away from the main jetty. Phi Phi is very pretty, I think it's well worth a visit.

Koh Lanta is a little cheaper and less developed, we stayed in a great place there called Baan Phu Lae which had lovely bungalows on a nice beach with good food.

A lot of people like the beaches south of Krabi - you can probably find some accomodation there which is closer to what you've been paying further North.
