Hi,
On January, I'll go for a snowboarding vacation in Engelberg (Titlis).
Since its my first time snowboarding in Switzerland, there are some issues I need clarification from the Swiss-old-hands.
So, could you please explain -

  • what is "Halbtax", and who is eligible to receive it ?

  • What is "Snow'n'Rail" ?

  • What would be the recommended skipass to buy if I:

  • quote
  • Arrive in Switzerland via Zurich airport.
  • Plan to get to Engelberg by Train.
  • Will have 9 days of Snowboarding in Engelberg.
  • /quote

Thanks,
BR.

Titlis Awesome!

You are going to have a sick time. I am jealous.

Alright, Halbtax mean half price train tickets. It costs 150 CHF and is valid for one year. This is the best secret to travel rail in swiss, which is of course stupid expensive and since tourism is such a major cash cow in La Suisse they dont really advertise it.

All you need is to just have an address in switzerland (use your hotel since they'll mail you a card) youll need passprt pics aswell. So with a Halbtax you get 50% off all train tickets, buses, boats and most cable cars that are not privatly owned. They will give you like aprint out as a temp until you get the cardto use right away. You need to show it everytime the conducter comes along with your ticket. You get the money back in like two trips.

Snow n' rail is a combo and is cheaper with the halbtax. Its usually for just a couple days. From Zurich central train station to Engelberg with the halbs and 6 day lift pass, included train tickets (you need at least a halbtax for this promo) they take care of your skis and bags, bus transit from Engelberg train station. cost 260CHF . get your german transltor on

looks like it start on Jan 11th though. hope this helps, they offer incrediable deals for people that live in Swiss or know about them. Good luck and your gonna have such a good time.

Thanks moscowmetr: your's an excellent reply.

It seems as I only come to Switzerland for this vacation (I do not live in Switzerland),
and the train/bus ride from Zurich airport to Engelberg is relatively cheap,
and - I'm needing a 9 days skipass, neither Halbtax nor Snow'n'rail will be helpfull to me.
Am I wrong ?

Bye,
RB.
