This might be an odd question but I'm into running and fitness. I don't want to give this up when travelling South America.
I've been to various different countries is SA before but was wondering what people think about how safe it is to go out running on my own?
It would help if you're more specific as to where you intend to go.
In Argentina, Uruguay and Chile you'd be totally safe running in the cities, as long as you don't go too far from the centre. Watch out for traffic, though. The same would probably go for the cities in Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru, although people will likely look at you as though you were crazy.
Outside the cities, I wouldn't recommend doing it. For many reasons, primarily traffic, but safety may also be an issue, although you obviously wouldn't have much on you.
In BsAs, a couple of parks make for much nicer runs than the streets do; in particular, there's the Reserva Ecologica, and the green area north of Aeropuerto Jorge Newbery.
I guess I was thinking about places like Lima, La Paz, Cusco, Santiago.
Nice to hear that people have the same ideas. But i won't bother running, I will make long hard hikes in the mountains instead. That should keep me fit i guess.
I am leaving for buenos aires the 10th of march and i will go up to peru. maby I will see you along the way.
