My girlfriend and I are off to New Zealand for a month in Feb and we are still undecided whether to take waterproof trousers or not.
We know it's high summer at that point but we also have several tramps planned in both the North and South (Pinnacles, The Glaciers, Milford etc.) and wouldn't want to get caught out with the sometimes unpredictable weather. Anyone have any experiences of this type of activity in a NZ summer??
Also, any tips on what trousers are best to go for? I am a fairly serious photographer so will likely to be up at silly hours in all weather conditions so a lightweight and breathable all day pair would be great if such a thing is available?! Or would people just go with packable overtrousers??
Cheers in advance
Yes, definitely take waterproof trousers if you're going for long tramps, the weather is really unpredictable even in the height of summer. I took bog standard non-breathable plastic packaway overtrousers. They were fine for me, but not tremendously comfortable - they were essential though, we had one day where it rained torrentially on the Routeburn track, and that was in January.
I would agree - the weather is unpredictable and changeable in NZ, and Milford does see a lot of rain even in the summer.
If you're planning on decent-sized tramps I'd definitely agree with the others - take them But although you might encounter rain, chances are it'll be quite warm so take this into account and make sure you have some comfortable, breathable ones!
Thanks everyone, will take note on the breathable side of things for sure!
Anyone know of any particularly good ones?
Just a quickie to say I have found some waterproofs from Kathmandu. Very good set of breathable, waterproof overtrousers that are very compact too. Worth a look I would say if any one else is on the lookout for something similar as their prices are pretty good too.
Thanks for all the advice.
