Do anyone know of any areas throughout europe that I should stay away from. Or any areas that I should defintly see. We are very much into history and are backpacking for six months. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appricated.

There aren't really any major trouble spots in Europe at the moment, though you'd need some careful planning if you wanted to go to some bits of former Yugoslavia (notably Kosovo).

The main dangers are some poor driving standards in certain countries, and all of the usual urban things that you would expect in any city in the developed world - usual precautions apply.

If history is your top priority, I reckon Italy is your number one choice - Rome and Pompeii are truly amazing, and most people are equally struck by Rennaissance cities like Florence and Siena.

The Peloponnese peninsula in Greece is full of great ancient sites - including the Corinth canal, the temple of Epidavros and the remains of Mycenae.

Much of France is peppered with interesting historical locations too - I was recently in Carcassonne, the walled fortress city of the Cathars which is extremely well preserved. And I'm not going to discount Britain, we've got our fair share of castles, stone circles and Roman bits.

Maybe a good route would be Greece->Italy->France->UK?

Though I'm sure anywhere you travel in Europe you'll find something of historical interest.......

i can also recommend paestum in italy if youre going to pompeii, its not that well taken care of but its an easy half day trip with the train and its cheap to get in, and theyre pretty big temples!! appraently theyre the best preserved greek style temples outside of greece...

Be aware of a frat party if you go to Interlarken, Switzerland.

Theres a Totalitarian breakaway state of Transnistria in Moldova that will certainly be an interesting place to see, but dangerous on the wallet to bribe officials.

Kosovo should be fine as long as your not Serbian and you dont wander around the forests looking for landmines.

Barcelona beware of your wallet on the main strip.

In Moscow and Budapest beware of the taxi drivers who take you to so-called nightclubs and rip you off.

Places to see: Istanbul and Berlin - my top choices!

Berlin is not to be missed - there is loads to do so leave yourself a few days. Prague is also worthwhile and has plenty to see.

A friend of mine got friendly with a girl in a bar in Barcelona only to find out later, and too late, that she was actually a member of a gang and set him up to get mugged by her idiot mates.

That said it was the only bit of trouble I heard of and Barcelona is up there with my top five destinations, it has a fantastic atmosphere and I would recommend it to anyone
