Hi everyone, I'm gonna be flying NZ - USA in May next year (Auckland to (most likely) New York). While I have done this flight non-stop before, I'd really like to break up the journey somewhere along the way, just because I can - see somewhere new, lessen my jetlag etc etc. What are my options? I think the Pacific Islands are the most logical, is there any other possiblities? I'd like just a short break along the way, and yep I'm a backpacker so budget-friendly is important
You could take a stop at Honolulu/Hawaii and if you wanted to make more of a go of it you could get one of those cheap inter island flights and go to somewhere like the Big Island to hire a car and see some really nice nature. It is possible to get by reasonably cheaply there as long as you stay at a hostel and get public transport where possible.

id go for the cook islands myself. much cheaper than hawaii and not as spoilt by tourism.
i stayed on rarotonga, and theres a good few hostels there. just make sure you dont go for the cheap ones by the airport as alot of the flights tend to come in between 2 and 5 am and go right over your head
