From the Associated press...

Baby born on transatlantic flight

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — A Jordanian woman gave birth to a healthy daughter during a flight from Amsterdam to Chicago, the Dutch airline KLM said today.

The woman went into labour over the Atlantic on Tuesday, KLM spokesperson Frank Houben said. After conferring with flight controllers and three doctors who happened to be on board, the pilot decided to land at St. John's Airport in Newfoundland.

But the baby was delivered by the doctors in the plane's pantry minutes before the plane touched down.

And what will they put on the passport where it says country of origin/place of birth

Well, if it was only minutes before landing, then they were probably already over Canada, or at the very least within our territorial waters.

Therefore, in the name of Canada, I claim this baby a Canadian citizen. We will call him Gordon and feed him maple syrup and back bacon. He will watch Degrassi Junior High and enjoy the music of Anne Murray.

Why can't place of birth be in the sky or on a plane-rather than make things complicated.

i'd love to be born THAT way :) (although i don't think my mom would've appreciated it)

I came out to OZ from the UK with my parents and my mom was 8 months pregnant with my brother. She nearly wasn't allowed to get on the plane, except for a slip up on a doctors note that didn't have a date on it so it was convieniently put there! hehehe.

When we were on teh plane, my mum was told by the people on BA, that if he was born on the plane, He would have free flight with BA for life!!!!!!!

Funny tho isn't it, the mum will get jack squat for doing all the hard labour, while the baby gets the free flights for life. Being the older brother too, i was rather pleased that he didn't come early, otherwise i would have been well annoyed and jealous of his special treat!!!

So i wonder if KLM do the same thing with this baby?
