hello folks!

I am travelling latin America in March and it is not only my first time travelling but my first time in Latin America. I am starting in Cuba or Dominican republic then making my way over to Brazil etc. I want to visit Cuba, Puerto Rico, DR, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, then maybe Costa Rica or some other central American country.

The question I have is simple...and maybe a bit stupid?

what the hell do I bring in my backpack?? I want to do a mix of stuff.....I'm not too fussed about travelling up EVERY mountain I see, but definately want to see the Inca temples etc in Peru and Chile. Apart from that I'll be doing a lot of cities and staying in a mixture of hostels and rented apartments....I want to be kind of flexible I guess....

Is there any items you can recommend that are an absolute must? So far my cuz has given me a pretty cool compact first aid kit with almost everything, I've been told I'll need a washing line, hiking boots too as well as smarter stuff for the urban areas in case I go out at nights. Is it possible to stay in some kind of rented accomodation on the inca trail? Or will I have to lug a tent around too?

What are the absolute essentials?

There's a couple of threads on this subject in the gear forum. I can't think of anything continent-specific to pack, but remember to bring repellent and, if applicable, malaria medication.

Hi Andy,

Check out the Wiki Travel guide on the Inca trail for all details.
