...Those who read such drivel here at T.P. are mature enough, have sufficient self- esteem, and are using their brains enough- to not feel slighted or crapped upon.

Obviously

- Wasen't referring to myself, mate. You want to describe the so- called ' disabled ' in our global population as being not able to ' function as intended '- you go right ahead. A comment like that just flies by me like fish- wrap. It means nothing- because it IS just that: nothing. I don't even waste my time laughing at it. As well, others who participate in this ' friendly forum ' and happen to ' have ' specific ' disabilities ' likely would not waste their time with it.

- What concerns me here, however, is that the comment itself- which was absurd and regressive- should have shown up on this thread / forum in the first place.

- Happy New Year's

A disability is a condition or function judged to be significantly impaired relative to the usual standard of an individual or their group.

Take a chill pill or lose your insincere moral outrage. The choice is yours.

Which doesn't rule out that a person can do their job as intented, and with some modifications life their life just like people who meet the 'standard' (which is not more, then just a standard).

It is very very weird to compare being a smoker to being a person with a disability.
I am not surprised that Kezin is irritated.
Anyway I wonder if James is being purposely offensive in this thread judging by this and a few other things he said.

- ' Judged ' by whom ? Define ' Usual '. Wikipedia offers but ONE definition. It is not a Fascist Template.

- I certainly do not need to ' take a chill pill ' as I don't care a rat's rectum for your comments. As I have already maintained: I am not irritated or upset, there is no ' insincere moral outrage '.

- My only concern- as already stipulated- is that inaccurate and hurtful commentary should show up here on this forum. The substance of the comment itself does not touch me in the slightest; the fact that the comment- or opinion- is displayed HERE, does.

- Don't bore me with your insults.

Can't we all just get along?????

All this ruckus over one person's opinion about smoking. Okay, I realize James has very strong opinions about the subject and is more than willing to share them with us, but... While people have been busy deciding if they are offended or not, if James is just being "mean" on purpose, and defending your own point of view - you've missed the big picture here.

I must say first though, smoking can create the inability to run around the block. Inability does not equal disability. But, that's really neither here nor there for making my point. Instead of jumping all over James for equating smokers to disabled persons, we should be embracing him for his ultimate wisdom. Granted, those who currently fall under the Americans with Disabilities Act and those included under similar acts in other countries may disagree, but James has given everyone a way to bring smoking back into public places. If those who smoke are truly disabled (as he states) then they should be accommodated because of said disability. Access should not be denied because they are disabled. Ashtrays should be provided or it could be construed as discrimination. (Can you say major lawsuit?!) Look at the bright side - James has just classified all smokers as a group of individuals with a disability. Instead of arguing over the semantics, band together to have smoking included in the Acts and your rights as a disabled person returned to you.

Now, do we all feel better about our disability?? I know I do!!!! By the way - who stole my lighter??? Give it back!!!

Can I have one of those old "smokeless ashtrays" in my office?

To you cry babies out there, I"ll remind you what I wrote - "personally I think that smokers are similar to disabled people in that they are not able to function as intended - I did not say that they were disabled.

My point - and you know it - was to highlight the fact that your average smokers typically experiences effects to their health - shortness of breath, persistent coughs, reduced fitness, and a decreased sense of taste and smell among other things - that can make it more difficult to perform certain activities than if they didn't smoke.

I would have thought that it was quite simple.

Smoking is rubbish.

I still have the odd cigarette at parties though for some reason.

James is just grumpy because he did not get out of Australia at all in 2007.
If it was not for those smokers whose healthcare he has to pay for he would have been around the world 10 times last year. ;)
