is a suit important in finding small jobs?

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific is a suit important in finding small jobs?

I'm going to australia for a few months and then to NZ for a year maybe more if it's cool. so I was thinking about leaving the suit at home until I get to NZ where I will have more time to find a job in graphic design. and then having it shipped from the eastern US to NZ...how much would that cost?...maybe I'll buy a cheap suit.

anyway, would I need a suit to get small jobs here and there in australia or would I just need a nice shirt and a nice pair of pants?

thanks

I'd buy a cheapish (but not cheap) suit.

Unfortunately here in Australia, formal work wear for the guys is still pretty much expected. Makes wearing a suit in summer on a hot train to work utterly ridiculous, but there you go.

I worked for several small design/advertising/webdesign agencies in Australia and New Zealand, and I suspect they'd all eye you very weirdly if you showed up in a suit. You might want one for the large agencies, but given the much, much larger pool of small agencies, I wouldn't bother with it. If you discover that you end up wanting one after all, it's easy enough to go out and buy one, or to have it shipped. Will cost you a week or two, but on a year's time, that should be acceptable.

awesome. thank you much. I've only ever worked in-house and at a small ad agency here in the states. the agency had very formal clients though so I wore a suit to the interview and then a nice shirt everyday.
