Hi everyone,

Just wondering if im going on a harvest trail in Oz and saving money, do you think I could save enough to be able to travel SE Asia, China etc efficiently? Before heading back to australia and finding a permanent job. (all within a 12 month working holiday visa)

Any info or experiences would be great!

Fruit picking/harvest trail work is definitely not the highest paying job you'll ever have lol. Whether you save any money while doing this kinda work really comes down to your partying preferences I'd say - $11.00/hr soon dwindles away when you end each day with a couple of pints at the local, or drink up large on your days off ;) Having said this though, fruit picking jobs often lend themselves to saving - you might be in an area that's quite far from the nearest city/town, and therefore all the spending you'd do there! SEA is a budget friendly travel destination, so I reckon if you go about the harvest trail the right way, you should be able to hop over there for a while. Alternatively (and I'm getting all sensible here lol), save up and put some money aside for SEA before you head to Aussie. Then you can enjoy the harvest trail any way you like without constantly counting your pennies

Yeah, we wern't planning on partying all the time, just doin it purely just to save money and see a bit of rural Oz. Would rather save money up over there than over here, paying rent and bills and enjoying the lovely weather we have. I hear you can live on site in some jobs.

Why fruit picking? Lol. But I agree that you'll save alot in the rural areas than in the urban areas. But seriously, what other skills do you have?

If you're feeling lucky you could always take a gamble and try panning for gold instead...

There's always other options to fruit picking. If you have a skill then you can always use that. I'm a computer programmer who contracted in Oz, thought I'd end up doing bar work etc. when first got there! Made a lot more money and had a lot of fun as a result :D

Yeah my skill is hairdressing, i was only going to go back into this once we have travelled around a bit. Plus also like i say we would have to have accomodation and bills to pay for.
