Travelling from Delhi - Nepal: advice please!

Travel Forums Asia Travelling from Delhi - Nepal: advice please!

4 of us (all female) are heading to Delhi in 2 weeks.
We are spending a few days there before heading to Nepal (Kathmandu) and we cannot decide on the best way to get there.

We definitely want to go to Varanasi also and I have been reading up on other posts that you can go Delhi - Varanasi - Nepal by train / bus.

We have been told that the train goes via Bihar which is apparently not a particularly good place .... apparently a lot of theft on these trains and the fact that we are 4 females also makes us slightly nervous.

Can anyone advise on the options for us to see Varanasi either on the way or way back from Nepal that would avoid having to go through Bihar? If we needed to go via Darjeeling or anywhere we would consider this as an option?

Has anyone had any bad experiences with travelling through Bihar?

Many thanks for any advice given!! Much appreciated :)

Hi

There should be direct trains to Varanasi from Delhi. Just tray to get a 4 berth kupe and keep the windows shut. My girlfriend almost got her bag taken out of the window on a train. From Varanasi take a Train to Ghoratpur. and then 3 hours bus to the border of Nepal. From there it should be 6-7 hours to Kathmandu.

Good luck!

You might want to consider flying? (just 1 way if you want to see Varanasi). Also keep in mind the roads are pretty poor in Nepal and the bus system is apparantly quite apalling as I've heard it's unreliable and there can be huge delays, although 1 trip or 2 may be fun if your itinery is flexible :D

I'm doing a similar trip myself as I'm flying from Mumbai -> Kathmandu (via Delhi), but then prob going on train/bus back to Delhi from Nepal on the way back once I get my bearings in the area.

I agree with the route that u have suggested.

Take an overnight train from Delhi to Varanasi and travel in Air conditioned 3tier sleeper which is much safer and it costs slightly more than an ordinary sleeper class ticket.

visit Varanasi and then depart for Gorakhpur by a day train which would take around 6 hrs

From gorakhpur u can reach the Nepal border at Sonauli in 2 hrs by bus, which u can complete the visa formalities and take the bus to Pokhara and Kathmandu from the Nepalese side of the border.

DO let me know if u need any more info:)

Yea as everyone said, you can take train. I have experience travelling through bihar, and trust me even not being a typical foreigner myself, I had a hell of a time. Whacky place and its soo dirty. And top of that female, you should really take care of yourselves and belongings.

As "arif_kool" said, take Air Conditioned Coach, that'll be pretty much safe. And once you reach here, Kathmandu, its all cool. Chilled out!!! Oh yea, don't forget to bring in some warm clothes, its pretty chilly out here rite these days.

Have fun!!!
