Sebjy has indicated that this thread is about Malaysia

Hi there,

Myself and my girlfriend will be in Kuala Lumpur from the 9th-15th January yet have no idea what there is to do other than shop.

There's only so much shopping we can take so any ideas on what else there is to do would be greatly appreciated???

Thanks again

Seb

You should have a look at the Kuala Lumpur article in the guide. There's a fairly long list of things to see and do while there.

The Batu Caves are definitely worth a look, although beware the long walk up. Once you enter the caves though, it is a quite surreal place.

Visiting the Petronas Twin Towers is kind of a must as well. You can get a tour and walk on the "bridge" between the two towers, although I didn't do that part. Might be worth doing if you like getting a nice vantage point ;)

If you want to head out of the city for a day or two, I'd recommend a visit Malacca, a cool old colonial Portuguese/Dutch town.

Um, other than that -- enjoy all the cheap food as much as possible!!

you're right, 5 days of shopping in KL is over the top.

try Cameron Highlands for an overnighter...see some info at http://www.angelfire.com/cantina/mycar/camerons/camerons.html

Melaka (Malacca) coming recommended I see...a good side trip too but mostly shopping, looking at colonial archi, and sipping beer...it always seems a lot more hot in Melaka the times we went.

Batu Caves is out in Kepong district...difficult by bus...try hiring a taxi for half a day (RM200?) and also get to KL Zoo (which is much improved over the years), and perhaps Lake Gardens (deer park, lake and butterfly park).

KLCC as aquaria underneath it now. Not bad.

you can also consider going to MPO-malaysia philomornic orchestra at KLCC. Perhaps the Zoo at Ulu klang, KLSE- i.e. the stock exchange!,see architecture of Sultan Samad building, train station, Muzeums, Aquarium, etc. See www.virtualmalaysia.com, or www.tourismmalaysia.org.my, for an idea of what to see and do. If adventurous, can even go to Kuala Selangor for firefly watching, like the Glow Worm at Te Anau, South new Zealand, or at Waitomo cave.

Malacca, my hometown is rich in History and very cheap food. There are lots of Muzeums to see and tasting nyonya cuisine. You can go to D' Paradise at Brisu for Agro Tourism, or A' Famosa Waterpark at Alor Gajah, for Wild Wild West show or the water theme park. It is two hours by bus from Kuala Lumpur.

Cameron Highlands is good for the breathtaking sceneries of tea plantations and cool climate. Hope this helps.

Oh, be aware of taxis overcharging, and try to find out the normal fare first. For ladies, try not to bring handbag when outside.

Times Square has an indoor roller coaster which you may find fun - but check it's working as wasn't when we were there :-(

Also, the KL tower is as good, if not better than the Petronas Towers as you get a 360 degree view of KL. You can also take buffet lunch in the revolving restaurant there. Price quite reasonable.

I'd definitely recommend a night or two in Cameron Highlands. It's SO relaxing there (stay at Daniel's lodge - they have a nightly campfire and bar!) and the scenery is lovely. Malacca is ok for one night. Chinatown there is great they have a night market there - you'll have to check which day though as my memory fails me...have a feeling it's Sunday.

Oh, and make sure you take a walk around the Petronas Towers at night - spectacular! I would also recommend a trip to the Orchid Garden in KL - it's near the bird sanctuary.
