I have 4 nights in Auckland before travelling around north and south Island. What hostels would you recommend?
i have looked at both Base hostels they look pretty good anyone have any preference? I like a party atmosphere and as i will be travelling alone a friendly hostel is essential!

Thanks and recommendations welcomed

I haven't stayed in Base in Auckland but stayed in 2 of them in Oz and they were both pretty lively and had bars on site. ACB (Auckland Central Backpackers) is a popular one and as the name suggests is right in the centre of the city. It has a little bar joined on to it and I believe they regularly organise nights out/activities for backpackers.

i havent stayed in base in auckland but i have stayed in the one in wellington and christchurch. theyre fine hostels, very expensive and impersonable but usually very clean and have good bars connected to them. the same can be said for ACB which i have stayed in. its huge but is definatly central and the bar is supposed to be a good laugh.
do not stay in the fat camel, i hated this place and got zero sleep while there.
my favourite hostel in auckland though was city garden lodge. its small, quiet and friendly.
its not a party hostel though.
have fun.

I've stayed at the Fat Camel Hostel in Auckland. It's pretty reasonable I think, and has the party atmosphere going on. It's not at the level of the Base hostels though, which are more "flashpacker" type things!!

In Auckland I have stayed at
- Fat Camel, which I didn't particularly like (the room was an airless box) but was cheap.
- Ponsonby Lodge, which was nice, and in a nice place, a little way out of the centre.
- 'Princeton Backpackers', actually empty uni halls of residence apartments being rented out - this was actually my favourite, they were really quite swish japanese style apartments for dead cheap, but not very sociable.
