after what seems like months of planning, my girlfriend and i are finally headed on our trip tp asia in a little more than a month. as a first time international traveller i was wondering what is the best cost efficient way to call home (to canada) when i am overseas? ive lookd into international calling cards and im just not sure which one would be best. any suggestions??/

also, my hotel in Hanoi is telling me it is best to book a Halong Bay tour ahead of time, is this true?? or should i be waiting till i get there, to get a better price??

thanks in advance;)

Rhett,
I never call home, just e-mail. My mom cannot use a comouter, my nephew reads it to her over the phone. Then he e-mails her remarks back. That may also work for you with a bit of planning before you leave. In thailand, there are many places to call home and it is now quite reasonable per minute. It was not cheap in VN.

DO NOT book anything before you get to VN. I have arrived 4 separate trips to VN w/o any reservations. I always find something acceptable in my price range. There are so many options on HaLong Bay tours, wait until you get there. I opted for a one day tour due to weather. It was raining and too cold to get in the water. This was in Feb. Decide when you are there how many days and with what tour company. There is serious competition between companies, play one travel shop off against the others. I asked 4 people on my tour and got 4 different prices for the day tour. Go to at least 3 travel shops for prices and then bargain. You will see what I mean once in HaNoi. Be sure to book the Water Puppet Show. I loved it and will go again when in HaNoi. The box office is just across the street from Hoan Kiem Lake, NE side. They have several shows each evening. Worth your time & money.

Rhett, I have heaps of VN photos in my gallery. Take a look and send me a PM if you have any questions.

Another possibility is to Skype if you're bringing a laptop or will visit internet cafes.
A friend recommended www.fring.com but I've yet to explore it
