hi there im planning on booking a flight to bankok for the early part of next week 13th to 16th of jan . Im looking at going for about 9 or10 weeks and was wondering on what anyone would suggest to do with that time, my thoughts were anything to do with thialand laos cambodia and vietnam and possible hop over to india for a week? not really sure dont want to rush through everything just to say i been there though. also how does that work with the 30 day thialand stay if i fly in spend a few weeks then comeback to thialand when i go to fly home cuz i was just going to book my flight return to bankok unless anyone had any better suggestions on somewhere better to fly into. thanks shawn

If you want to do this part of Asia, flying in and out of Bangkok should be fine. However if you include India you'd prolly be better off to do that the last week and fly home from there. If you decide to do flights within the area you can book those on the go on the internet.
Doing Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam is a good plan and you should be able to do it with the time you have.
Check out some info on border crossings and visas, i'm pretty sure you need an advance visa for Vietnam and also if you plan to go Laos to Cambodia or vice versa through the Si Phan Don area, for example, you'd need a visa since last time i checked you couldn't get a visa on arrival at this crossing.

I actually have an idea of a route i've been thinking of going myself on my other computer so if you get compleatly stuck you can pm me if you'd like. I like the Rough Guides when getting ideas for this kinda trip as you can get travel times and can figure out bus routes without much trouble. I'm pretty sure that the Thailand guide has all the info you need to get started.

You could also lazy around S-Thailand and enjoy the beaches, i did that for 2 months and had a great time but then again i did have 4 months :)

Also on the Thai visa, you get 30 days when you land and if you cross the border you get 30 days when you return. You shouldn't have problems.

Shawn,
I would not book anything first. There are so many options in BKK that you will get a room. Here is a map of the Khao San Road area. Most start their stay in BKK in the KSR area. I would try to hook up with some other backpackers at the airport and share a taxi to KSR. Start chatting with everybody in your age group about rooms and getting into BKK. Just about everybody is in the same boat that late at night.

You have enough time to do the loop. Tour northern Thailand, into Laos, over to HaNoi, tour VN exit from HCMC to Phnom Penh via bus or boat. Up to Siem Reap to tour Angkor Wat, back into Thailand at Poipet border. Head down to the beaches in southern Thailand, into Malaysia and Singapore in interested and enough time. Back to BKK for your flight home.

I have many photos of most of this trip in my gallery. Send me a PM if you have questions.
