i am going to be in singapore and johor bahru in may for a golf holiday and would like to know if there are any backpacker areas in both cities, i am looking for a couple of nights accomidation in each, unforturnately i can not stay in dorms this time as we will be looking for somewhere to leave our golf clubs when we are not playing and the guys with me are first time travellers and i have had a hard enough job steering them away from the top end hotels.
any help would be appreciated
Bugis, Arab street/Chinatown/Little India are the major backpackers areas. You might like to check out The Hive, had a friend stay there before. There're probably some listed in hostelworld.com or similar sites.
In Singapore I stayed at the Hang Out at Mount Emily. This was a bit more out of the way but a bit of a higher-class hostel, more like a hotel at hostel prices if that's more suited to your friends? The only thing is it doesn't have a kitchen you can use.
I'd recommend it for safely storing your golf clubs, but it's about a 10 minute walk to the main subway that goes to China Town, Little India and the other well-known areas.
7 Storey Hotel in Bugis is pretty much as clean, cheap and as friendly as you'll get in Singapore. Would definitely recommend for you to stay there. It is a hostel, BUT if you book ahead, you should be able to get an entire room to yourself as the dorms are quite small (eg. 4-6) AND they have quite large lockers in the dorms.
