I've heared that there are car manufacturers who use travellers to transport their vehicles across america, and give you the car either for free or very cheaply in return for its safe passage across the country.
Does anyone know anything about this?
In Australia and New Zealand they call this "relocations". Googling for "relocation usa" I however get lots of companies wanting to help me (and my belonging) relocate, rather than wanting me to relocate their cars, so I suspect the term in the USA might be different.
The main problem with the scheme is that you usually only have a very limited amount of time to bring the car from B to A, so won't get to see much of the country in between.
Not sure about car manufacturers, but try www.autodriveaway.com
They have late model cars that need to be transported all over the country. I have used them heaps. You can get right the way round the U.S if you are prepared to divert a little.
As for time, you get plenty of time to get the car from A-B. You certainly can't take 3 mths to get it there, but if you plan your trip and are flexible- it works a treat.
They will sometimes give you fuel money too!
