We are planning to go to Riga, Kaunas and Vilnius this May. will fly to Kaunas for 4 days then to Vilnius for 4 days and to Riga for another 4 days.
We loved the architecture, the churches and the cathedrals, are they as lovely as Prague?
Can anyone help with cheap B&B in the city center and the local transportations?
Besides these few places are there any interesting place near by to visit?
I appreciate some advise about those places.
if u like history at all, theres a creep KGB prison chamber in Vilnius. And Riga has a great Cold War Museum.
In Vilnius go to the Hill of Crosses.
thanks coldwarspy, are those places easy to find? we loved historical place.
Any idea about the architecture, are they beautiful?
I've been to Riga and the architecture is impressive, but not as much when compared to Prague in my opinion.
The cold war museum (and most museums/sights in Riga) are located in the 'old town' which is fairly compact and easy to walk around.
Thanks for the info.
I know very little about those places, it have very little travel guild books and info enviable to these places. It seems to me that 4 days in Kaunas is a bit too long, or should I stay longer in some other place?
Please, some one do give some advice if you've been there.
West of Riga lies Jürmala, a village within easy reach of Riga and worth visiting for its beach. North-east of and further away from Riga is the Gauja National Park, which is nice for its nature. It can be visited on a daytrip from Riga, but you need to set out early. On your way to Kaunas is the famous Hill of Crosses, located in Siauliai across the border with Lithuania (and definitely nowhere near Vilnius!). Further in Lithuania and more towards the Baltic Sea lies the Žemaitija National Park, nice to visit for its nature and for the well-hidden, former Soviet missile base. Near Vilnius is the excellent Trakai Island Castle, which should not be missed. Further away from Vilnius towards the border with Poland and Belarus lies the village of Druskinikai, which houses a fabulous park with Soviet era statues. Most of the places I mentioned are mentioned in the excellent and free PDF-guides from In Your Pocket. You may want to read those before you set off. Have fun!
Thank you so much - ReinierNL, I'll go through it.
Cheers, have a nice day.
I've got few hotel lists from travellerspoint, may be someone had stayed there before could give me some good tips or better choice. As for sleep, we are quite easy as long as the room is en-suite, clean and no traffic noise will do.
In Riga - Augustin hotel / Best hotel
Kaunas - Litinterp gusthouse
Vilnius - Auksine Avis
Thanks for the helps.
Hi. I am from Riga.
In Summer 2008, is July 5-12 we Will have a Song Celebration Festival, folk music, folk dances inside and outside houses and culture centers, u know.... I strongly recommend You to search for more info about Dziesmu svētki, maybe You'll replan Your date of Arrival.
Another Day You can spend in Aquapark "Līvu Akvaparks". For more info come here: http://www.akvaparks.lv/pleasures/
This is the biggest Aquapark in Baltic states, really nice place with saunas, attractions and mini-bar in the water. "Līvu akvaparks", ok?
The most beautiful and ancient buildings are located in Old Riga. I recommend to visit Doma square, and Powder Tower, and Monumentum of Freedom, and National Opera (not only from outside).
Public transport tickets cost 0,40 santims, and 0,50 santims if You buy it from bus driver.
Hope You'll like Riga and Baltic States, and will discover a totally new World.
Thank u so much sisidra. Since u are the local there perhaps u could recommend few budget hotel there?
I really am appreciated it.
