I was pleasantly surprised to see that, even after months of absence, I was still up there with the gurus... man, my posts must be rated really well :)

Maybe it would be a nice feature for each member to see how close they are to promotion or demotion, just as means to increase their involvement? Or doesn't the complexity of the algorhitm allow for such predictions?

You're not all that close. Though you're not all that far either.

It probably would be possible to keep track of user ranks and then week-by-week show whether users are increasing or decreasing in rank. Interesting idea :)

Oh, please dont do that.
I think members should focus on travel and attention should directed away from these statuses.
There is so much competition about these statuses that I dont always post answers on the countries I have been to in non off topic threads in case somebody comes along and says they are not travel guru standard. It is so off putting. But maybe others enjoy this kind of atmosphere so just my 2 cents. :)

Are you for real? That doesn't bother me. I just give the advice I know and think is relevant. One sentence or a whole page, don't care. The people who then say it's not travelguru standard are pretty pathetic

Yeah, they are arent they.
But when they start whinging to moderators etc it becomes not worth posting my information. Yeah, I am for real.
Also, travelling is important to me and people going on about these statuses sort of makes a mockery out of it.

I agree quite strongly with Mel. in thinking that this is a very bad idea (though not exactly for the same reasons). Contributing to the site should not be a competition, and recognition for contributions should not be the goal of the contributors; yet the more emphasis you give to these things, the more they will become so. Such is human nature.
Of course, it's great that useful contributions are recognized and "rewarded", but please, keep this as understated as possible. (I know you don't agree with my reasoning here, and won't go for this, but in my ideal setup, I'd hide the member status by default, and only show it to budding members (so the only members who'd ever see someone's members status would be budding members), since they'd presumably be the only posters on the forum who haven't yet learned through personal observation who gives useful advice about what subjects).

Some of them seem to know. I get a lot of private mails from budding members asking me questions about Thailand and Iran because of posts they saw that I made on threads about these places.
But anyway, there might be lots of members who are not travel gurus who are knowledgable. It would be a pity if the Buds presume that the travel gurus will be the ones who will give them the answers they need. Every well travelled person was once a budding member with lots to tell about travelling.
Wouldnt the fact that members get facilities to show off their photos, blogs, wiki stuff etc in their own name be reward enough for what they contribute? I am not much of a show off in these areas but I do feel rewarded when somebody takes enough of an interest in what I have to say about a country on a thread to ask me for more about it.

Surprised to hear some of you are so passionate on the issue :)

Mine was intended as a fun, harmless idea, but you may be right, and it may indeed attract unwanted competition. Never thought about that...

But, if that is a relevant concern (I can't really judge), Sander's may be a good idea as well; hide status from anyone except those members who may have a true interest in knowing... in any case, I personally would like to see TP either do more with member status, or abandon/hide it altogether. As it stands, the feature adds very little...

Hi you "Gurus"........

I´m more interested in that some "gurus" havn´t logged a blog, trip, photo or anything else other than offering "opinions" on the forum posts.....

seems strange for gurus that are supposidly "so well travelled" and have apparently travelled recently to not have these things on the site?

As for my tuppence worth........

That´s why I´m not bothered about these statuses at all....

people can look at someones profile to find out all they need about whether someone knows what they´re talking about ... or not!

That´s what I do anyway and you soon get to know who knows there stuff and who´s full of crap!

Hope that livens up the "debate" ;)

But it doesn't hurt anybody as well, so maybe it's time just not to talk about it anymore
