Hello, I fly into Kolkata on the 20th, and will have about 10 days (I know it's not a lot of time) to explore India. I'm thinking something along the lines of:

Kolkata: 2 days
Varanasi: 2 days
Agra: 1 day
Jaisalmer: 2 or 3 days with an overnight camel safari

I fly out of Jaipur, so I'll probably just check it out some before my late night flight.

So since I will have a couple more days, should I try and visit Old Delhi, or another city in Rajasthan like Udaipur, or Jodphur???

Are all these destinations linked by train(preferably overnight)? Should I try and book them in advance online, or will it be easy to book them while I'm there without too much risk of them being full?

Thanks for any help.

With only 10 day I think you already have too much listed there. Jaisalmer, though really great, is too far out of the way to add on to a 10 day trip from Kolkatta. Personally I think Kolkatta - Varanasi - Agra - Jaipur is about as much stuff as you should plan on seeing. You will want more than two days in Varanasi to really get a feel for the place. If you really think you'll have time to add things, make it towns that are on route or close by, such as Khajuraho, Orccha, or Pushkar.

Remember all of the journeys will be an overnight unless you are planning on flying, so is a push for 10 days unless you only stay one night in most places.

Eg
1 night Calcutta
Overnight to Varanassi (I think?!)
1 night Varanassi
Overnight to Agra
1 night Agra
Overnight to Jaipur
1 night Jaipur
Overnight to Jaiselmer
1 nights Jaiselmer
Overnight back to Jaipur

Why not try to change your flight to Delhi and cut out Jaipur/Jaiselmer? In my opinion, Delhi better than Jaipur and Jaiselmer too far out for a 10 day trip... Then perhaps you can fit in a few more places en route to cut down travelling time.

And yes, all places you've mentioned with the exception of Udaipur (if I remember rightly) are linked by train.

Thank you both for your input. I've changed some arrangements and now will have 14 days to visit India. So claireh, you like Delhi more than the cities in Rajasthan??? Interesting. I kind of figured it was just another big city with the red fort. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Quoting claireh

1 night Jaipur
Overnight to Jaiselmer
1 nights Jaiselmer
Overnight back to Jaipur

And yes, all places you've mentioned with the exception of Udaipur (if I remember rightly) are linked by train.

just to add to what u have mentioned..... Udaipur is connected by train with the conversion of metre gauge to broad gauge.

Jaipur to Jaisalmer train consumes much time and it reaches Jaisalmer by 13:30 in the afternoon, so u have to keep this in mind.

IF u include Jodhpur, then the journey Jaipur-jodhpur and jodhpur--jaisalmer are true overnight journeys as u reach early in the morning with full day in hand to do the needful
