Ethiopia has a long history of orthodox christianity and it shows in the country. Beautiful rock hewn churches in Axum and Lalibela. Also the ethiopians claim to have the ark of the covenant in a church in lalibela. Sashemeni south of addis is the land given to the Rastafarians by haile selassie and you can arrange an overnight in the community the locals call it jamaica. Addis Ababa isn't so interesting head north to Gonder and use it as a base to see some great things!

"Addis Ababa isn't so interesting"

Actually, like most places, it's as interesting as you choose to make it. Meet people and learn about their lives. I feel that's more interesting than any church or vista...not to say that Ethiopia doesn't have wonderful sights. There just something ineffable about the place and the people...I know, I was married to an Ethiopian princess.

Thanks Interluke and Brance. I'm travelling to Addis Ababa, initially, on Saturday. Fascinating to hear your opinions on it. I think Lalibela has got to be on the itinerary too!!

the danakil depression i think its called allong with simian mountains are my attraction to ethiopia as well. ive tried the meeting local people in many places and 9 times out of 10 ive just ended up being ripped off. but thats all part and parcel of travel. i am certainly looking forward to meeting the locals and seeing how honest/dishonest they are :)
