I'm going to be travelling to NZ overland as much as possible going via China - I was going to buy a laptop here and take with me but have though that maybe it will be cheaper to just buy one in China - has anyone done this and do any of you have any advice?

Thanks :)

I shopped for electronics in china and did not find them any cheaper. I didn't ask about deals on laptops but you probably could bargain a bit. Plus throw in the fact that your warranty may not be valid in your home country and I just wouldn't do it. If you do decide to do it, you will certainly have lots of choice as there are loads of elcetronics stores in the major cities. Watch out for scams and deals that sound too good to be true.

When I went to Beijing I remember thinking I would buy some memory cards for my camera as it would be cheaper, it wasnt. I went to lots of shops and converted the currency and worked out it was no cheaper.

Plus all the PC instructions would be in chinese, i think!

I bought my laptop in China (in fact the one I am tapping my fingers on right now)
They were very helpful in the shop, they took windows XP chinese off for me and put the latest version on in English. No problems with the laptop or the service but... it was not cheap by any means same price as the UK really, I was also under the mis-conception that I would get a cheap bargin!

Computers and parts are a little cheaper in Hong Kong and Singapore then main land China. But it is not going to be a super bargain. Keep in mind the other costs such as the time and stress of buying it.

I bought a laptop in China and unfortunately, the memory card was defective and it only showed around 2 months after I bought it. Now the thing is, the company had a service center here but they won't honor the warranty because I bought outside of my home country. bummer eh? So lil me had to spend more just to have it fixed (laptop kept on restarting).

Maybe you can learn something from this

Good luck on your trip!

i advise you to buy the laptop back home. that would be more convenient, and cheaper, if the time comes the laptop needs to be fixed or anything.

When I went to China there was a lot of varities of electronic stuffs you can get there and one of those is a laptop.i checked out their laptops and it is pretty cheap compared to the one i bought at home.and i guess it has the same quality.maybe you can try it.i think it is better to buy it there so you wouldn't have to bring your laptop all the way to china.
