I had certain plans to visit Chicago this year, but during 6-8th of June I will be right in the hart of the Amazone basin! You can always visit me over there of course, I'll throw in the caipirinhas

Come to Chicago first, then hit the Amazon Basin! It's not going anywhere and Blues Fest only lasts the weekend. You can be on your way in 3 days. (Just bring the Caipirinhas with you.)

ps: Let us know when you will be in the city - maybe we can have a few mojitos together. ;)

I will! And some cuba libres are not bad either...although I like them with lemoncokelight...
I just have to write the US Immigrations service soon to see if my greencard and all kinds of prove that I was indeed outside the US for years have arrived and I am allowed to enter the US again
See this old thread of mine.

Michael - this happened to me - although l sent the green card back about 3 months after the incident not years!!!!! I heard nothing back - though the next time l went into the states l took with me proof that l was indeed at home working and spending in the UK - bank statements, mortgage payment proof etc and a letter from my employer. I was pulled into secondary questioning and they told me that l was wise to bring the proof cos otherwise l would've been on the next flight home!

So all you need to do is gather up the information and get your HR dept to write you a letter - as you work for local govt it may hold more kudos too and hopefully you should be fine!!

Cuba Libres - nice!!!!!!!

I'm from Chicago, Blues Fest is awesome and I look forward to it every year. A must see Chicago Event up there with "The Taste of Chicago," also during the summer

So there's been a good bit of craziness in my neck of the woods and I'll be heading back to the states early. Which means that I should be able to come to the meetup - yeah!

Isa and Beerman rule - Chicago hotel is now booked!!!

Yup - it's time to post some of the important things because The TP Birthday Party At The End Of Lake Michigan is still a go!!

We have booked our rooms at the Congress Plaza Hotel by Grant Park (sight of Blues Fest). As of this morning, they still had rooms available. We booked through www.quikbook.com which still lists room rates of $99.00/night for Friday through Sunday. The hotel website and other online booking agencies all list higher rates at this time. Granted, the hotel has been around since 1893 but it does have all the modern amenities and a lot of history.

The J. Ira & Nicki Harris Family Hostel (HI Chicago) still have beds available in the 10-bed female dormitory for all nights. Rates are $32/night or $35/night for non-members. Both the male and female 6-bed dormitory en suites are booked. Other hostels close to the loop area and public transportation are Arlington House International Hostel, Chicago Internationl Hostel and AAE Chicago Parthenon Hostel.

For more information on getting around Chicago via public transportation the CTA Visitor's page and map page are very helpful. Also see the wiki page under "Getting Around".

The headliners for Blues Fest are as follows:

Thursday - Johnny Winter and James Cotton
Friday - Koko Taylor and Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater
Saturday - Buckwheat Zydeco and Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials
Sunday - B.B. King

Admission to the Blues Fest is free. Hours are 11:00am - 9:30pm daily. Healiners appear at the Petrillo Music Shell. Six other stages will also have performances throughout the day. (I'd post the link for the list of stages but the URL is soooooo long, it's not accepting it to post as a hyperlink. )

You can create a shorter link by using a service such as tinyurl.
