if india is your starting point, you need to get your visa before you travel which is a fairly pain free process. Have you mapped which gateways you will be using to enter each city and how you will be travelling?

I am in Asia now, I entered on a 30 day visa but if you decide to stay longer past the 30 days in Thailand for example you can do a visa run to another country e.g Cambods, Laos, Vietnam just to name a few and you spend just half a day or less in the counbtry and when you re-enter Thailand you will get another 30 days. With places to stay it depends on your budget. Have you purchased the Asia Lonley Planet Guide as that should help you with places to stay. I would recommend Pai for elephant trekking in Thailand it is 3 hours north of Chang Mai. In India go to Palolem Beach was good on the west side you can stay in a beach huts there, wasn't very impressed with Goa as was very touristy. With India you need to sort visa out before you get there. You can apply for Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia in Bangkok

just do a google search for the high commission in your country of residence. Then you can either complete the forms and do a postal application or going to the HC in person and get your visa sorted in one day.
