How to Travel from Rio de Janeiro to La Paz?

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean How to Travel from Rio de Janeiro to La Paz?

My friend and I are leaving for South America for 7 weeks in March. We arrive into Buenes Aires and from there we plan on heading towards Rio de Janeiro, taking in the Iguazu Falls and Sao Paolo on the way. We then hope to cross over to La Paz and then on to Peru to visit Machu Picchu. On the way there we want to visit Bolivia. After Peru we will travel down through Chile and hopefully get down as far as Patagonia, then back up to Santiago where we fly out from.
Does anyone have advice on what is the best way to travel from Rio? Planes look too expensive and we want to take in Bolivia. Once we get to Peru it should be fairly straightforward (fingers crossed) to get down through Chile. Any suggestions regarding transport or itinerary would be much appreciated!

Nicest way would be by train via Corumba and Santa Cruz de la Sierra. From Rio, travel to Campo Grande by bus, and then on to Santa Cruz by train. From there, further busses take you west to La Paz (I suggest making a little detour via Sucre, Potosi and Oruro).

It's generally referred to as Corumba-Santa Cruz, since noone knows Quijarro. You're right that it doesn't go all the way to Campo Grande, though.

Travelling by bus from Rio to Campo Grande will take a couple of days. If you don't want to loose those days, you'd better don't come to Rio...

We are thinking of doing that overland trek in May... and I would like some advice too... sorry for jumping in on your thread!!

We are flying into Sao Paulo and we want to spend a few days in Rio and then go up to Campo Grande to the Pantanal... The advice I am looking for is we want to see Igazu Falls are we better off goign there when we are in Argentina, BA is on our hitlist, or going to Igazu before Campo Grande, (as in Sao Paulo, Rio, Sao Paulo, Igazu, Campo Grande)?

Any ideas or suggestions would be wicked! Tks
