An owner of one of the other travel sites wants me to tell him what his travel site does well and not so well compared with the others.
He thinks since I spend a lot of time on travel sites I would know.
So would u post your opinions here so I dont miss any points which I could tell him. :)

Kinda hard to compare if we don't know what we're comparing...

I suppose it is but what is good and bad about the various sites will do.

At the risk of looking like a spammer I will post the link here.

Nobody ever asked me before what I like and dont like about travel sites so I never considered the question.
I suppose I like when there is plenty of action. Lots of people to chat with and lots of experienced travellers to give info. And an easy to use layout. For example although Visualtourist is a popular site I am not keen on the layout. I cant see what is generally happening at one glance. This makes me only want to go in there if I have a specific question to ask. And I only go in there and answer a question now and again. The layout of this site(TP) is good for information exchange and chatting in general because it is easy to see at a glance when something changes after refreshing the screen. And the emoticons also make it easier to small talk so jokes dont get misunderstood.....
It is also important that the people are reasonably pleasant but I suppose a site does not have so much control over they types of people who congrigate at it.

Anyway any other opinions? What stuff is good and what is bad about sites.:)

I like everything about TP - it's user friendly, well designed, and extraordinarily simple. For me, simplicity is always the best way to go. There's no fluff here - it's all very streamlined. Everything has a reason and a place.

But what counts most for me is all the intangible stuff: friendly, helpful people. Fantastic owners who are down to earth and available. Great moderators who keep the peace in the nicest way (trust me - I've seen great sites go downhill fast due to insults and infighting; rules need to be made and enforced - the people here do that with great poise and tact and efficiency). You always feel welcome here and everyone has a place and a role to play. I think it's why people stay so long - and why we get along so nicely. I don't know how to reproduce that on another site - I think the stars are just aligned right over here.

Oh, I agree on that one. That is why I visit Thorn Tree only now and again. In fact I only go in there when I need a question answered. There are more well travelled people there than on any of the others sites but so many of them are not so nice people. As somebody on Travelblog said it is the place to go when u are in the mood for a good fight. Maybe I will go there more often if the new hated layout of the site scares away the weirdos.
There was also a travel site I used to be a member of. It used to have writing competions regularly and the winner gets a trip to someplace in return for writing about it while they are there. The people were so unbearably competitive there was barely any real travel talk. Just bashing of what other people said. To make it worse the members of the site had to score the writing of the others and this score had a lot to do with who will win the trip.

Tell the travel blog owner to join TP instead of passing our experience to you and you tell him/her.
