Im planning on spending 6 months travelling round SOuth East Asia starting in Hong Kong at the end of April but need some help with my route......
We plan going from Hong Kong to Hanoi via train but as we have to get a Chinese Visa we would like to spend some time in CHina without having to go to far away from the route between the two. Does anyone have any reccomendations of places to see near Napping or Guangzhou?
All help will be greatly received!
Though they aren't exactly on the route, you could do worse than stopping in Guilin, Yangshuo, and a few places in Yunnan, like Dali and Lijiang. They are all fantastic places to visit.
I did the same route as you (Hong kong then a sleeper train from Guangzhou - Nanning over into Hanoi) and spent a few days in Guangzhou, to take in the sights and sounds. The river is very nice at night time also. Be warned, it is very very different from Hong Kong but a good eye opener to what a modern chinese city is like.
Have you thought about seeing Shenzhen, before going to Guangzhou? Alot of people from HK visit there (to pick up cheap stuff like dvds and clothing).
The train station at Guangzhou is quite interesting, its basically a huge cattle pen where you are required to wait for a fews hour for your train in the baking heat. Think I was the only white boy in 10's of thousands of people....which was an eye opener . If you do spend a few days in Guangzhou, buy your ticket the day before you depart as the queue is very long.
If you need any advice about the crossing let me know.
