Okay this isn't really specific to Aussie but thats where I am... so has anybody ever jumped a train? I've talked to a couple of people that have done it (mostly in the US) and they said it was pretty easy blah blah blah... but anyone got any thoughts on the matter? Coz seriously how cool would that be?!

Depends what you mean by jumping a train. D'you mean jumping from or onto the train while it's moving?

Anyone who told you that 'jumping a train' was easy is a liar.

Doors on box cars are always locked unless they are being loaded/unloaded-the only place to hang on is the undercarriage.

If you're skinny and tough enough you can do it, one slip and the ground is 30cm away and the train is going 100kph.

I've jumped the trains in the UK a number of times, been caught a few times as well. But i spent a great deal of time on the trains in the US and not once did they forget to check that you had the right ticket.

if you are talking about jumping on a freight train...it might be easy in the US but it's seriously dangerous. You are going to run into a lot of hardened people with nothing to lose going that route. I would never do that especially in the south. You will bump into a few armed, angry, violent, hungry, drug addicted homeless people.

Yeah me and friend were looking into it to go from Melbourne to Perth but I've done a little research and unless I was going with someone that had done it before... we think we'll give it a miss... granted the few people I've talked to did it around 7-30 years ago when things like that were alot easier to get away with... Damn technological evolution!

Think we'll stick with hitch-hiking...

At the risk of sounding silly, I always thought 'Jumping the train' was not buying a ticket and avoiding the ticket man on the train like the plague! ;) I did it many times when I was 15/16 yrs and classed as a minor, but as it's classed as fraud I certainly wouldn't want to get caught as an adult !!!
