Burning photos on cd's in Asia

Travel Forums Asia Burning photos on cd's in Asia

Hello there,

soon I'll be off on my first trip to (East and South-East) Asia. What I'm mostly paranoid about at the moment is that classic fear of loosing your precious photos. I'm planning on going for the cd way: burning two cd's, keeping one and sending the other home, and when I can I'll also upload my pics to my flickr account.

So my question to those who've been there already is: How common is it for internet cafés / hostels&hotels to offer the service of burning cd's for you in this part of the world? Will I be able to find it practically anywhere or need I worry about not finding places with cd burners? (For clarification, I'll be going to Japan, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand).

Another thing: Should I bring my own cd's with me or can I get them in good quality at internet cafés and hostels over there?

Thanks for any help and tips

You'll never have a problem finding a place to burn CDs. Internet cafes and hotels will offer the service. And don't forget about photo labs. Those who used to make their money on developing film are now in the digital business and can burn your photos to CD, usually in a much more professional manner than internet cafes.
I usually carry a few blank CD's just in case I need them, but usually it's not too big of an expense to use the one provided by the business. I've never had any problems with CD quality.

Great! Thanks alot, that's what I was hoping to hear And I hadn't thought about the photo labs, but will keep that in mind, thanks for the tip.

Ok then I guess there's little left to worry about before I take off!

Actually now that I think of it I have one more thing I'm concerned about. During my trip in Asia I'll be away from my boyfriend for 3 months so I'd like to be able to call him frequently (or as possible) and am planning to use Skype for that as I have done before. Only, I'm used to skyping from my laptop but won't have it with me there.

I know there are some internet cafés that offer skype access, but do you know it that is common as well over there? Will I be able to skype from wherever or will there be barriers? I'm thinking of maybe bringing my own headset just in case...

Internet cafes that burn CDs/DVDs are quite common, but I would take your own DVDs with you if I was you. I burnt some photo DVDs in Bangkok last year and when I got back to England some of them wouldn't read.

how much does it usually cost? europe, it was around 5 euros for each cd burned, which adds up when you have to burn around 10 cds!

With the skype question I can only say for Thailand since it was only on my last trip to Thailand that I first used Skype. On previous trips to Asia I didn't pay attention if computers where Skype ready. But in Thailand, it's never a problem. You will be able to find plenty of computers with skype installed and headsets available in every town you go to. Occasionally I came across cafes who try to charge an extra skype fee as if it costs them more for you to use it. If they do that, just go to the cafe next door that doesn't charge extra.
