Hi, I am doing a 12 day Mediterranean Cruise in August 2-14th, 2008. I will be travelling with four other families.
The children ages range from 3-17 years of age. We are also planning to stay in Italy following the cruise- August 14th-24th.
Is it too hot for us to travel in the month of August? Should we cancel the cruise and re-book at a different time of the year. I was looking very forward to the trip until I started doing research on Italy and found that August is a very hot month in Italy.
A friend of mine swore she'd never travel Italy in August again. It went up to 35 or 36 C with blinding heat - they spend their days trying to stay out of the sun, which made it hard to visit things. However, it all depends how much you love the heat and the sun and how much you're willing to change your trip to adapt.
With the cruise part of your trip you'll be fine. If I'm not mistaken, most mediterranean cruises will stop in Spain (Barcelona and/or Valencia), Italy (Venice, Rome, Naples & Pisa) Croatia (Dubrovnik or Split), Greece (Corfu) and France (Nice). You won't escape the heat in these places although Croatia seems cooler than the others. Since you'll be spending most of your time on board the ship you won't be exposed to as much heat as you'd think. Stand on the deck and the sea breeze feels wonderful. Hot weather isn't worth canceling a cruise over. You'd just have to deal with it when you're doing the day excursions. Staying in Italy will be something else though. At the end of last July I was in Southern Italy (Lecce) and I thought my face was melting off. It was that hot. Even Milan was pretty humid although as with all of northern Italy, it cools down at night to where it's extremely comfortable.
