Hi all

The time time is drawing ever closer for me to start my travels and I was just wondering how much money you would or have taken to last five months comfortably in SEA???
I will be trying to stick to a budget as I have a long way to go after Asia but I also want to have a bloody good time!!

Any suggestions will be very helpful cheers Ruby

Steve,
Since you have been to BKK and VN, you already have an idea of daily expenses. My monthly budget may not be realistic for you, or others. If you insisit on having an a/c room each night , eating in a nice restaurants frequently and drinking most nights, you are going to spend more than I do. Rough guide is that you will need at least $1,000/month to enjoy SEA. I try to keep my expenses at about $700/month, but I am a non drinking veggie that stays in fan rooms. Yes, I am a 'cheap charlie' but I wear that title with pride!

I like to have £1000 per month , that is a good amount to do everything you want and not have to worry about anything . I like to drink when i travel and relax without thinking about money . But some people can budget themself a lot less , it all depends on how you like to enjoy yourself . Some people can last on £10 a day but there is no way i would travel on that type of budget because i would be bored to tears , and frustrated that i could not do what other people are doing who i meet . Budgets are good if you stick to them but it all goes out of the window when you get there and start to enjoy yourself , i guess it all depends on what type of person you are , if you are like me take as much as you can .

I agree with budgeting £1000 a month. It covers most eventualities and allows you to do most of activities you want. If you come back with money to spare then thats a bonus!!!

Wow, 1000 pounds is about 2100 Thai Baht a day. In past trips, my girlfriend and I budgeted 1000-1200 baht a day together. Usually when I travel alone I budget about 600-700 baht a day. On my most recent trip, since I went during Christmas I had to spend 1000 baht/day and I felt like I was throwing my money away. I drank way more than I normally do in Asia, and I stayed in places I normally couldn't afford. So I personally would budget something more in the lines of 300-400 pounds a month. The rest of Southeast Asia is comparable to Thailand so budget is roughly the same.
Having said that, on my most recent trip where I budgeted 1000 baht, some of my friends who I was with spent a hell of a lot more. They needed massages everyday, rented motorbikes everyday, ate western food almost exclusively, and did whole lot of shopping. They easily spend twice what I did.
So really, a budget is a personal thing. You can live for very cheap and still have a great time as I always do, or you can take a load of cash and have no trouble finding things to spend it on.

I agree with all the above four posts (that may sound strange but I will tell you why). The first time I went to SEA I had no budget at all really but I found my self spending approx 1000Baht a day, for that money I would have a fan room lots of beer, 3 meals a day, etc and did most of the things the friends I met along the way did. But that was an average over about a month. Some days I would spend more some days I would only spend 400Baht a day.
Again it is all relitive to what you do and the lifestyle you aquire.
I met a guy from Aus in Bangkok who told me he was spending about 4000Baht a day!!!!!!!!
I also met a girl on one of the islands who had only spent 140GBP in a month! That's like what... 300Baht a day maybe a touch more.
I know the above maybe doesn't really help you but you can spend as little or as much as you like. If you really want to be careful with money yet still have a good time spend about 700Baht a day (the other extreem is as much as you like).
I am off to Thailand next week and I will be there for 11 days, I only plan on spending about 14,000Baht in those 11 days which will include about 3 days and 2 nights in Bangkok, a little shopping, my bus and boat to and from the islands and a bloody good time. Maybe I will spend more... Maybe I will spend less again it's all relitive to what you do when you are there.
