I will be out in Bolivia, South America working as a volunteer photographer for three months from June 2008 and in September i will be flying out to Easter Island from Santiago (Chile) i wanted to know if any one could recormend a route from Cochabamba to Santiago, i've heard there are buses i can use but it would take a few days?
I also thought about renting a car or travelling by train i dont really have a preference but i am a female travelling alone so any advice anyone has i would appreciate!
As to safety, I'm inclined to think you'd be much safer when going by bus than renting a car. Much cheaper and much less hassle as well.
There's roughly three possible routes for what you want to do:
- 1 Via Arica
Cochabamba - La Paz - Charaña - Visviri/Arica (Chile) - Santiago
- 2 Via the Atacama desert
Cochabamba - Oruro - Uyuni - San Pedro (Chile) - Santiago
- 3 Via Argentina
Cochabamba - Oruro - Potosi - La Quiaca (Argentina) - Mendoza - Santiago (Chile)
- 2 is the most touristy (it includes a visit to the salar de uyuni and desierto de atacama, both very worthwhile for taking pics), #3 is probably the quickest; my guess is you could do that within 48 hours if you wanted to and if your bus doesn't break down. I don't know about #1; it depends on how well Charaña is serviced by public transport (some guidebooks mention a rail service to Arica, but I've never heard about it, so I wouldn't trust that information without confirmation).
