My husband and I are now 3 months into our RTW trip.
Our next stop is Rio for Carnival where we will spend a week there.
We plan the spend the rest of February travelling around Brazil. I have a feeling we may be trying to pack too much in and would be happy hear your suggestions.
- Rio - 1 week
- San Luis
- Parque Nacional dos Lencois Marahenses
- Ouro Preto
- Sao Paulo
- Iguazu Falls
Q: Does Rio shut down completely for carnival. Will it be possible to do some standard sightseeing on 31st Jan - 3rd Feb during the day like go to the Christ the Redeemer Statue, Sugarloaf Mountain, Parque Nacional da Tijuca etc?
Q: Apart from Rio is it still necessary to book accommodation and buses in advance for the month of February?
I guess we would need to get a flight from the north to Sao Paulo, can anyone recommend any good budget airlines?
Thanks so much for your help!
It may be a little too much but then how long's a piece of string?
you might end up liking it more in one place than another...so you shouldn't try and limit yourselves too much.
I'm not sure about Rio during carnival but if you hit other places they will be celebrating all over too so you'll want to check out that its similar dates because Brazil will be buzzing and booked up all over, particularly Salvador which is often seen as almost as good a place to spend carnival as Rio.
Airlines in Brazil: (do you know any portuguese? often its best to book from the domestic sites)
it's actually pretty easy to guess it's in the same format as most airline booking sites-return?, dates etc)
Ida e Volta = Return
Somente Ida = one way
De = From
Para = To
Partida = Departure date
Retorno = Return date
I live in Rio. Actually, I have never tried to go to Christ Redeemer or Sugar Loaf, etc, in Carnival days. But I'm almost sure you can visit those places. Just because Carnival (as well as Reveillon) are the days when there are most tourists here. I reckon govern would like to take benefit from Christ Redeemer and Sugar Loaf, as weel as from other places. My grandma works in Copacabana and those are indeed days full of tourists everywhere. Of course, there is a chance I'm wrong, but I guess I'm not.
