Any good suggestions of books to take whilst travelling for 5 months across South America, USA and South-East Asia???

It would need to be long enough to last until the next book swap yet interesting enough to keep me hooked!!

Maybe something in the mould of Vernon god little, money, catch22 or life changing like Catcher in the Rye.

Hmm... :

  • Anything by Bill Bryson
  • To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee)
  • A Prayer for Owen Meany (John Irving)
  • Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha (Roddy Doyle - or get his Barrytown Trilogy - it'll last you awhile)
  • Anything by Kurt Vonnegut (especially Slaughter House 5 or Sirens of Titan....oh, anything, really)

* Anything by Bill Bryson

I knew I should have posted a few minutes ago! But noooo... I chose to do a quick threadcheck first and then post.

I'll add:

  • Cannery Row - John Steinbeck

  • On the Road - Jack Kerouac

  • Naked Lunch - William S. Burroughs

  • Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee - Dee Brown

  • Black Like Me - John Howard Griffin

I don't know about life-changing, but these books are pretty engaging:

  • The Beach - Alex Garland

  • American Gods - Neil Gaiman (actually, most of his works are great)

  • Anything by Haruki Murakami

  • The Art of Murder - Jose Carlos Somoza

  • Out - Natsuo Kirino

  • The Dumas Club, The Flanders Panel - Arturo Perez-Reverte

You may want to check the book.. '1000 Places to See Before You Die'... it might become your guide on what's the best to see on the destination you're planning to head to...

If you want a life changing book then it has to be "Long Walk To Freedom" by Nelson Mandela. It is a very long book so it will keep you busy for a long time and it is absolutely amazing. It is the most incredible story of all time. It will definately change your life after you have read it.

Look for this book called "A Fortune Teller Told Me" by Terziano Tirzani. I went through a phase giving it out as a present for everyone for any occassion. Excellent read.

Into the Wild - Jon Krakauer

I was going to say that... I just finished it and I was completely blown away!!
It's not very long, but it's a great book to read on the road, I would guess.
