The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield is great for the road. No prizes for literary content, but the author offers a strong messge.

Jack Kerouac - the Dharma Bums
Eric Hansen - Motoring with Muhammad

And the one that changed my life,
Rolf Potts' Vagabonding, though its more a pre trip book than one you'd want to read on the road...

On the road anything by Paul Theroux is a fun read, i really enjoyed Garlands the Beach as well...

I would like to add the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to otherwise good suggestions :) Also Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. Fun books that keep your interest on long bus/plane/train rides :)

Well, I like to read books of lots of (travel)writers:
Michael Palin with that lovely british sense of humor.
Paul Theroux with very little sense of humor, but a very good sense of how to write down travels. Love it, especially when he writes about some irritating travellers he meets.
And then Robert Kaplan, Redmond O Hanlon and a couple more probably, also some dutch and belgian writers who most of you don't know....what a shame
