Im planning a trip to China in October, arriving Oct 9th to 22nd as you can see really dont have very long. My plan is Beijing to Xi'an (via overnite train or flight) to Chengdu and then Shanghai with a flight back to Beijing. I plan about 2 - 3 days in each area. I also like to travel to Tibet but ive been looking at websites and you can not travel there as an independent traveller does anyone know if its possible to join a 2day tour from either to Xi'an or Chengdu, if any way possible would love to fit it into my trip but i would only have a maximum of 3 days for the trip.
Going to Tibet (TAR) is very difficult and expensive. Just going for two days would be very hard just because even adjusting to the altitude would take that long. If your interested in seeing some Tibetan Areas you could go to southern Gansu, like Xiahe. But if you only have 2 days to play with i would recommend leaving Tibet for another trip and seeing a Pingyao instead which is a very nice Ming city between Xi'an and Beijing. I am currently working on a Tibet page for the Wiki and I should have part of it up by later today. The other parts will be up tonight or tomorrow. There is also a small Xi'an page on the Wiki.
In Chengdu there are some travel agencies offer individual Tibet travel package, which includes flight ticket with Tibet entry permit. The permit they provided is only valid in Lhasa area including Namtso Lake and some monasteries around Lhasa, it should be fit your plans.-snip-
