I will be in Cancun for only 8 days but want to get out of the city as much as possible. I want to go down the coast of Playa del Carmen. I also want to see Talum and Chichen Itza.
Should I rent a car ( how Much ) or rely on public transportation?
I am on a budget but also want to be able to see everything in a short amount of time.:
totally recomend the buses ....because renting a car is more confortable but those roads are very dangerous....and very expensive....there are very good services at buses.....like from cancun toplaya del carmen only 4 usd per person..one way....and togotochichen itza also like 5 or 6 usd.....and running very often...so no problems at all................enjoy your stay at beautiful cancun
Yes, buses are ok, and I would even recommend getting the Chichen Itza tour, it includes the entrance fees, the guide, and the lunch for the day. MAYALAND tours are the best for that.
I would also recommend the bus to Tulum.
And yes for prices rank from 4 to 6 USD., 8 to 12 for round trips.
A car is like 35 to 60 USD for the day.
The thing with the road is that it is so straight and wide now, that people get confident, and race, speed is very dangerous, that is why no wonder there are so many accidents!, and yes, not always caused by locals but by the same tourists renting cars... (No complains, just saying so...)
So it is up to you, a car will make you free but if you are willing to spend time driving when you might well be sleeping...
Also consider your nights out drinking and lots of party time! recover some rest during these rides!
Enjoy and if you need anything lemme know
I live in Playa del Carmen and I will be glad to help.
Dito on the previous replies.
I would add emphasis on getting the heck out of Cancun as much as possible. Cancun is a tourist trap to the highest degree.
Well, I totally agree on using the buses around Cancun and down to Tulum, but I like taking a car to go to Chichen Itza--but mostly because this allows you to go on to Merida, it allows you to stop at a cenote (small pool in a cave--good for cooling off on hot days) on the way--and because buses on winding road during a hot day makes many people (including my wife and I) "carsick". A car will allow you to get to Chichen Itza in half the time--but, yes, it is much more expensive.
