Hi,

You're best bet is to the take the Greyhound bus. It only takes approx 2 hours and is quite cheap.

I recommend the train, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. The Greyhound bus station downtown LA is in a very bad neighborhood known locally as skid row. High crime rate, drug usage and homeless in the area.

It is easy to get from LAX to LA Union Station (train).
Take the FlyAway bus (fare $4 USD one way) from LAX.
LAX Drop-Off and Pick-Up Locations
All FlyAway buses drop-off passengers on the Upper/Departures Level of each terminal at LAX. Passengers board buses on the Lower/Arrivals Level in front of each terminal under the green "FlyAway, Buses and Long Distance Vans" signs. Each bus is marked with its service location. Take the one toward "Union Station."

Upon arrival at Union Station, purchase a ticket for any Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, they run all day. Here is the Amtrak schedule:

If you ride the train southbound during daylight hours, sit on the right side to get the ocean views. The train is relaxing and there is food and beverage service.

On arrival at San Diego, you have excellent local transit in the form of San Diego Trolley right on the platform (painted red cars).

Bon voyage.

Hi Ham Radio,

With this in mind, do you know the best way from San Fran to LA? Is there a similar train that goes down the west coast?
Also, do you have any idea of how much it might cost?

Thanks

I'd recommend a flight from SFO to LAX. Southwest Airlines recently started service into SFO. However,

Amtrak Coast Starlight (train #11), one way fare is approximately $60 USD depending on when you want to travel. This is an all-reserved train and you will need to reserve and ticket in advance. It's a 12 hour ride. The train can run late.

The train actually departs across the bay from Oakland. There are Amtrak connector busses from various points in San Francisco, but you will need to reserve a seat on the bus you want at the time of reservation. Look at (and print-out) the .pdf timetable then select from the drop-down menu on the reservation page.

Good luck.

You can get to either the San Francisco Airport (SFO) or Oakland Airport (OAK) via the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) from downtown San Francisco. Go west/south for SFO and east, then south for OAK. There is a free shuttle from the Oakland airport BART station to the airport, whereas the BART system stops right at the San Francisco airport. If you want to get to San Jose Airport, take the BART system towards the San Francisco Airport, but get off at the last stop (Milpitas) which is just one stop after the San Francisco Airport, then take the Caltrain down to the San Jose train station. From there, you get a bus to take you the last 1 mile over to the San Jose Airport.

From any of these airports you can get a flight to the Los Angeles Airport (LAX). It is cheaper to fly Southwest from either the Oakland airport or San Jose airport. Since it takes slightly less time get to the Oakland airport, I suggest that route. The BART system is around $1.75 to $5.00 and the Caltrain is about $5 to $6, and the plane flight will be from $44 (when on sale) to about $99 (one-way cost if you book ahead). If you wait to book on the same day, then it will run $139 to $160 one-way.

Enjoy
