budget motels vs. backpacking

Travel Forums North America budget motels vs. backpacking

Ok, so I'll soon be travelling the States with my boyfriend. I've previously always been a solo traveller and used backpackers hostels. My boyfriend, on the other hand, just doesn't *get* backpacking lol. He doesn't wanna share rooms like that and would like a little more privacy - fair enough, I must admit it might be nice to do things that way for a change. However, we're still on a budget. So realistically, what would we be looking at spending on a cheap motel room for a night/a week etc? Obviously this'll vary between States, so definite destinations so far are California and Florida. Any advice much appreciated

Huge variation depending on location and quality.

I've spent as little as $20 for a hotel in the US but it was nasty. Other areas you'll struggle to find a room under $150. Overall though I'd say you can find budget accomodation for around $50/night as long as you stay out of the high cost cities like NYC, LA, SF, etc.

I agree - it depends on your destinations as to whether budget accommodations even exist. Another consideration would be finding hostels that have en suites available. It'll be a slightly higher price than the dorm rooms but usually cheaper than a budget motel.

I've found the southwest to be the mecca of budget hotels. The further north you go the more expensive they become.

You may have another option. If you are here for more than 6 weeks and want to visit many of our Nat'l Parks, it may make sense to buy a van. Many vans are available for under $2K and will sleep 2. Resell it when you leave.

Send me a PM if this sounds like something you may want to do.
