Crossing the Caspian Sea

Travel Forums Africa and The Middle East Crossing the Caspian Sea

Am trying to plan a trip to Armenia next year, travelling through Azerbaijan, Iran into Turkmenistan. I then want to cross the Caspian Sea back to Baku in Azerbaijan.

Anyone ever done this before or know if theres a ferry service? If so any idea of costs?

Yes, there is a ferry that crosses the Caspian Sea between Baku and Turkmenbashi daily (it's not timetabled as far as I know, but it leaves daily).
I heard it's about 100 dollar to cross for a cabin or so, but somehow people book the cheaper tickets (probably just a seat?) and upgrade for a small fee on board to something fancier.

By the way, the only way of travelling independently in Turkmenistan is to arrange a 3 day transit visa and you have to name your entry and exit point. 3 days does not mean 3 times 24 hours, the day of arrival is already one day! That way you can only hope the boat leaves in time that day.
Because of that somehow I think it's better to travel from Baku to Turkmenistan first and than onto Iran and Azer. After arriving by boat you can easily travel in 2 days to Ashgabat and into Iran.

Maybe check stantours for a letter of invitation (LOI) you have to arrange when applying for that visa. I am not sure though if they arrange transit visas as well. If you have some money and time and don't mind to have a guide around you, you might arrange a small trip with them. Although it is organised, at least you are able to see something of the country, which is not possible independently. Otherwise no need to go there really.

LOL, yeah, no what you mean. Basically, lots of government people are just paranoid indeed. They just need attention because of a lack of attention during their pathetic youth.

But hey, when there...domestic flights are 1 dollar and petrol 1 cent.....a litre. At least it used to be that way.
