we are travelling from canada to romania for 2 weeks in june. we are interested in bucharest, in the farming area in the north, in the romanian wine industry, possibly in the danube just because it sounds interesting......we don't know what is in transylvania......we probably won't get back to romania in our lifetime so what are the things we really should not miss????......the entire country sounds interesting. we are in our early 60's, pretty fit and we travel really light. We also like to hike but don't want to bring camping gear so a half day hike is all we would like to do on this trip. Does anyone have any suggestions about an itinerary that would work? Do we have time in 2 weeks to see some of the wine region as well as the farming area in the north or is that trying to do too much in too short a time ? We have toured Chile, from top to bottom in a rental car by ourselves, and also Spain and Italy....we actually prefer to see a country on our own.....but maybe we should revise that way of operating when in romania??...do you think it is safe to rent a car in romania and head out by ourselves?...we are not "budget" travelors, nor are we millionaires.
We are just facinated with what we read about romania and want to see as much of it as we can in the 2 weeks we have. thanks for your help. sue.
I'll try to help...
regarding the car: if you have the money choose any of the international companies : alamo, hertz, avis, renacar, dollar. we found a cheaper local company, everything worked wonders but if you are in trouble, the biggest the best. and trust me, it's easy to be in trouble in Romania, bad roads, crazy drivers and tons of carriages. Don't be scared of renting a car but you must know it's not the best country to drive. Just be relax and avoid harrying up , also because the corrupt police. Avoid the police!! they are gonna try to nick you just making up anything.
Bucharesti: I don't like the city but is the capital.
Sinaia : one of the best places , in the middle of the mountains you will find the astonishing peles castle as well as the monastery.
Risnov: extremely poor, close to Bran where is located the famous Dracula's castle. Visit the castle on the top of the mountain.
Brasov: great city. don't mis the view from the top of the mountain.
Sighisoara: i was litle bit disappointed because it's really old and they don't take care of the city. it's really like go back in time.
Painted Monasteries - Moldova's Region- awesome! traditional and autentic. it's really hard to get there. a lot of hours driving through a terrible road, however it's a worth visit.
Cluj- Big city with a great young atmosphere.
Sibiu - the best city!! capital of eurepean culture 2007. great city and best people!
check my blog, maybe you can get useful ideas : http://gom.travellerspoint.com
for me Romania was a great experience!! sure it will be for you too!!
Of courser Dracula's castle in Bran!! a worth visit!! Don't miss the cross between Bran and Pitesti through Transilvania... it's so beautiful!! Mountains of transilvanya are spectacular.
Where in Canada are you from? It is too bad you won't be visiting in the summer of 2009 when we are opening our unique mountain lodge in Transylvania - I am Canadian as well and with a UK business partner we visited Romania and loved the countryside and decided to open our future business there - there is some amazing hiking and biking and outdoor possibilities.
I am curious how you would traditionally book or search for a trip like this (aside from advice on this site of course)? What made you interested to visit Romania in the first place.
All the best!
when you're in bucharest you should visit 'Casa poporului" (The People's house) which is the second biggest building in the world
'cause it's june and it's probably hot you can go to the seaside to the Black Sea
then you must visit the beautiful monasteries in the north of the country and Bran castle (Dracula's Castle)
the roads aren't good , but the people are friendly and the food is delicious
