I'm going to South East Asia in October, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thiland. I want to volunteer somewhere, not sure for how long but don't want to pay a ridiculous amount to do it, does anyone know of any good projects that I could just rock up to and help out for free?
A fellow TP member is running a volunteer program in Cambodia for free.
Check out this thread: Cambodia: Volunteers please to help children - no fees
Some other members have joined the program and have even blogged about it.
Read about their experience here: Pam and Keith - South East Asia
U could volunteer whatever skills u have at the Dada Childrens Home near Sangklaburi in Thailand. Sangklaburi can be reached by public bus from Kanchanaburi bus station.
It is home for many single mothers who are refugees from Burma.
Examples of the skills u can volunteer.
Teach music, art, English, Sports......
Read books and help kids to write to pen pals and play sports...
Organise birthday parties etc,
Work in the organic farm or garden.
Support mud brick construction projects
Funraise , write project proposals etc
Or anything else u are able to do.
It costs around 150 Bahts per day to stay there and I think this includes a few vegetarian meals per day.

NB: Work permits are needed by all foreigners working in Thailand, even volunteers. For more information see this link. http://www.thaivisa.com/work-permit/how-to-get-a-thai-work-permit.html

I have friends that help orphans and poor families in Phnom Penh, no fees. If this is something that may interest you, send me a PM.
