Travel Forums Asia Where to go in Asia?

Hi Everybody,
I am in need of help planning my asian vacation. My mother and I are headed to Seoul, South Korea to visit my sister, who is teaching english. We will spend April 10 - April 19 traveling around South Korea. My mother and I have time to visit another Asian destination from April 19 - April 24. We are considering Japan and Hong Kong because the flight time is 2 - 3 hours. We are also considering Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), Honoi, and Bangkok, however the flight time is 4 -5 hours. I know many people rave about Bangkok and my friend highly recommends Saigon and Honai...but are these destinations worth the longer flights? Or will enjoy Asia just as much if I go to Japan or Hong Kong? Please help!
Thanks!

Best Regards,
Troy

If I were you I would probably stick to Japan and Korea for convenience. You may be thinking that Korea and Japan are very similar but infact they are quite different by look and culture. I lived in Japan for a few years and went to Korea on a vacation. If you are heading to Seoul you will easily be able to take the train down to Busan. From Busan there is a ferry (a fast one- 2.5 hrs) and a slow one (over night) that leave from Busan and arrive in Shimonoseki (southern tip of the main island). I think there are probably ferries that go to Fukuoka as well, a more known city.

From there you can either check out Kyushu (my favourite of the Japanese islands) or you can take the bullet train to the more known places like Kyoto and Tokyo.

Bangkok and that is great and so unique but if you don't have time to get down the the islands and the more tropical areas then you are missing out. I have never been to Vietnam, but I guess it just depends on how you spend your time.

If you want any more tips let me know...

My advice is to go to Bangkok! After flying from the U.S. to Korea a flight of only 5 hours may not seem that long! Choose your seats ahead of time so you don't get stuck with the bad seats. Tell your mother to get up every now and then to stretch out during the flight so she doesn't feel so cramped.

Bangkok will be cheaper than Japan and Korea and present a different view of Asia. Thailand has a pretty good grasp on tourism and it is easy to get tours from travel agents in the city. Transportation is cheap and well organized. Hotels are cheaper than Korea and Japan too! Food is cheap, you won't have to eat a lot of sushi unless you want to! Lots of cheap McDonalds and KFCs too! Up to you!
